Let one of Chivas’ expert brand ambassadors bring to life the Art of Blending, showing you how to marry together single malts and lighter grain whiskies from different parts of Scotland to create whiskies that are greater than the sum of their parts.

You’ll be working with four, fine malts from Speyside, Islay, the Highlands and Lowlands sampling the incredible melody of flavours and blending them to create your own whisky to take away with you.

The experience will give you an insight into the work of Chivas’ Master Blender, Colin Scott, who works with over 30 mature, meticulously selected and high quality whiskies to create the consistently excellent Chivas Regal 12 years old, 18 years old and 25 years old.

People struggle with the concept of blended whisky, seeing it as the poor man’s malt but as About Manchester found out it’s far from the bottom of the pile.

Blended makes up ninety per cent of worldwide sales, quite a surprising figure really as you think that the single malt is supreme and Chivas is the third most popular selling to two hundredcountries, unlike the others it is a premium starting from 12 years old and upwards

Being a master blender is a skill handed down taking forty years to get to the top of the tree. The masterblender is supreme, blending up to thirty malt whiskys.

The history of Scots whisky sees it first mentioned in 1494, though the spirit that you would have seen them would be unrecognisable, never appearing in bottles, never matured and light coloured

The modern industry started in 1824, before that it was a case of stills dotted around the Highlands, before the government raised at there was tax to be gained from this pursuit.

The first blenders came out of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Chivas came out of Aberdeen at this time, and they found that when the grain whisky was blended with the malt it brought out a distinctive flavour combining the best of both tastes.

Before long Whisky followed the industrial revolution around the world, becoming the only true global spirit on the back of Britain’s trade around the world.
Today a typical blend is made up with a base of around fifty per cent of Grain whisky combined with the distinct tastes of the Lowland variety! typically quite delicate with soft floral flavours, Islay’s the heavy smokey whisky, Highland Whisky and Speyside. As for the actual Blend, well gat would be telling, suffice to say that About Manchester’s attempts at blending were well received.

Knowledge like this has been accumulated for more than 150 years at Chivas Regal since James and John Chivas pioneered the fine art of blending. It was they who discovered the importance of the smooth, rich and mellow Speyside malt that is at the heart of every sip of Chivas Regal.

Those who really understand what it takes to blend a Scotch whisky form a select group, and it’s one Chivas invite you to join.
