Manchester children’s charity Wood Street Mission has opened referrals for its flagship project to kit out children for school, SmartStart Manchester & Salford.
Families living on a low income can apply to the charity for help with uniform in time for the new school year, over the months of May and June.

SmartStart gives out non-branded uniform to pre-school, primary and secondary school children. This year children starting reception and year 7 will get additional help given the extra costs associated with starting a new school.

The charity is working with Trutex, a leading national supplier of school uniform, to help kit out thousands of school children over the summer.

Roseanne Sweeney, chief executive of Wood Street Mission, said: “Many families struggle to afford school uniform which means their children can stand out and be embarrassed or bullied at school.”

We are delighted to be working in partnership with Trutex again this year to provide thousands of local children with high quality, smart uniform to help them fit in and want to achieve.”

Rowena Allen, a Trutex spokesperson, said: “We are proud to support Wood Street Mission and the SmartStart project. Providing children with the right start to school life is so important and the work the Mission does goes a long way to support families. “

Wood Street Mission aims to distribute one million pounds worth of school clothes and kit over the next three years – enough to provide a school uniform to every child living below the poverty line in Manchester and Salford.

It is appealing to supporters and suppliers for donations of non-branded uniform, sports kit, school bags and stationery over the summer months.
