The Bishop of Manchester will lead a short service at 10am on Monday 6 October to mark the relocation of the city’s Cenotaph.

The Rt Rev David Walker will be joined by veterans and others for the ceremony taking place at the Cenotaph’s new setting at the Cooper Street end of St Peter’s Square.

Councillor Tommy Judge, Manchester City Council’s lead member for armed forces and a veteran himself, said: “The feedback we’ve had from veterans and members of the public about the relocated Cenotaph has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to focusing on the preparations for Remembrance Sunday.”

Meanwhile the Council has announced a raft of measures to ensure the Cenotaph is respected after the actions of a number of skateboarders and BMXers caused minor damage to it.

These measures range from 24-hour CCTV monitoring and increased security, and minor design alterations to inhibit the misuse of the area, to the planned establishment of a Friends of the Cenotaph group to help act as custodians of the memorial.

Councillors and council officers will also speak with skateboarding and BMX groups to promote the use of legitimate facilities provided elsewhere in the city and encourage them to spread the message that the Cenotaph is off-limits.
