Former Manchester United winger Albert Scanlon has been honoured with the naming of Scanlon Lane in a new development in Salford today.

Scanlon who died in 2009, was a survivor of the Munich air crash, suffering a broken leg and a fractured skull. He played one hundred and twenty seven games for the club in all and lived and raised his family in Salford.

The road, off Liverpool Street in Pendleton, is part of a £650m regeneration project aiming to build affordable family homes.

Fellow Busby Babe, Sir Bobby Charlton formerly opened the road and said that “Albert was extremely proud of his roots in the area and would be delighted that this project is improving the lives of so many local people.”

Scanlon left Old Trafford in 1960, ending a six-year association with the club and would go on to play for Newcastle, Mansfield and Lincoln.
