Stockport people had the chance to learn more about a spectacular new piece of public art planned for the town’s new transport interchange at two special events held recently.

Artist Tim Ward, who is working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Stockport Council to create the artwork for the interchange, hosted two drop-in sessions at Merseyway Shopping Centre and the Vintage Village held at the Market Hall.

Tim wants to celebrate Stockport’s history, landmarks and people through the artwork and, along with arts development agency ArtReach, he has already worked with many local groups to collect ideas and information.

Tim said: “A key element to my art is the ability to engage with local communities. I want to capture the stories, knowledge and imagination of people in Stockport.

‘’It was fantastic to meet and talk to so many people at the drop-in events, and I’ve had some really useful feedback which will help towards the concept for the final artwork.”

Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, Councillor Kate Butler, said: “I’m delighted there are plans to bring the new transport interchange to life with art showing Stockport’s important heritage. I’d encourage anyone who has ideas about this or is interested in finding out more to get in touch with the artist so that your views can be included.”

Councillor Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, commented: “When local people are involved in the public art for an important building such as the interchange, it gives a real sense of ownership.

“I hope that this will give a chance for Stockport people to feel even more proud of their heritage.’’
