Pixie Lott, best known for her raft of pop hits including ‘Mama Do’ and ‘All About Tonight’, steps into the shoes of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the stage adaptation of Truman Capote’s classic novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s from Tue 12 April – Sat 16 April.
Directed by Nikolai Foster, Artistic Director of Curve, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is set in New York in 1943. Fred, a young writer from Louisiana, meets Holly Golightly, a charming, vivacious and utterly elusive good-time girl. Everyone falls in love with Holly – including Fred. However Fred is poor and Holly’s other suitors include a playboy millionaire and the future president of Brazil. As war rages on in Europe, Holly begins to fall in love with Fred – just as her past catches up with her.
Speaking of her role as Holly Golightly, Pixie Lott says;
“This really is the dream role for me to take on for my first play. I feel incredibly lucky. Of course people will make comparisons with Audrey Hepburn, but I would never try to replicate an icon like her as she was a one-off, truly unique. I hope audiences feel I bring my own interpretation and personality to the role. My Holly is free-spirited and has lots of energy, and we also see glimpses of the secrets of her past. But she is a survivor. She makes it through.”
Style-fan Pixie is most definitely excited by Holly Golightly’s wardrobe, she says;
“Holly has lots of costume changes, and wearing actual, fabulous vintage pieces and accessories from the era really helps me with her character. They’re not custom-made Givenchy gowns like Audrey’s, which would be incredible, but they are the next best thing. I love experimenting with the way I look, with different hairdos, and with make-up, and this is so far removed from my usual get-ups.”
Twenty-five year old Bromley-born Pixie is taking a temporary departure from her singing and song writing for this drama debut, but she did originally train as an actress at Italia Conti Academy as a teenager and appeared in musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium.
Pixie says; “I have always believed in being as rounded as a performer as possible, and it’s always good to push yourself out of your comfort zone. I did that when I took part in Strictly Come Dancing [in 2014], I learned ballroom and Latin from scratch, which I really loved, and this year it’s been really amazing to focus on acting. I will still be working on my own music alongside the play, and in the two breaks I have from the tour. I’ve been writing new songs at every opportunity I can, and hope to have new music ready towards the end of the year, with a little teaser or two in the summer.”
Matt Barber (Atticus Aldridge in Downton Abbey) stars alongside Pixie as Fred and Victor McGuire (the sit-coms Trollied and Bread) will play Joe Bell. They will be joined by Robert Calvert as Doc, Naomi Cranston as Mag, Charlie De Melo as José, Tim Frances as Rusty Trawler/Editor at 21, Andrew Joshi as Yunioshi, Melanie La Barrie as Mme Spanella, and Sevan Stephan as OJ Berman/Dr Goldman, with Katy Allen and Andy Watkins.
Truman Capote’s classic novella has been adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize-winning Finalist and Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), and contains memorable songs from the era as well as original music by Grant Olding (One Man, Two Guvnors, RSC’s Don Quixote).
