Police have launched an appeal after a large group of teenagers launched fireworks at a police van in Ashton Under Lyne on Bonfire night

The attack happened in Burlington Street where a police van attending an incident was surrounded by the group.

The group then began firing fireworks directly at the van, which smashed the window and left the officers with minor injuries.

Sergeant Ryan Magee of GMP’s Tameside borough, said: “These officers were going about their job, trying to help our local community, they were lucky not to be seriously injured.

“People will have seen this group, and I’m asking for those of you who know someone who was involved, or have some information that could help find the people responsible, to get in touch.

“There will be an extensive police investigation into this incident and targeted work in the area with police partners.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2199 of 05/11/17. This can also be done anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
