Greater Manchester Police are supporting a national week-long campaign to inform motorists of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving and the penalties for doing so.
Under the current legislation, introduced in March this year, motorists caught using a mobile while driving receive six points on their licence and a £200 fine, double the previous fines before the change in the law.
The legislation also means that new drivers caught using a mobile while driving, could have their licence revoked for a first offence under the New Driver Act.
Chief Inspector Tariq Butt, of the GMP Roads Policing, Travel Safe & Mounted Unit, said:
“Unfortunately a small number of drivers continue to put lives at risk by using a mobile phone while driving. Their blatant disregard for the safety of fellow road users and pedestrians needs to be addressed”.
“As mobile phones are now a part of everyday life and used for a number of purposes, including social media, we urge new drivers to pay particular attention. Not only are younger drivers statistically more likely to be involved in car collision, if caught using a mobile while driving they could have their licence revoked for their first offence.”
