Police are continuing to appeal for information after a man attempted to rape a girl in Openshaw at the weekend.

A 10-year-old girl had been walking with friends before she became separated from them around 2.00pm on Saturday afternoon.

A man approached her as she walked down Kincraig Close and led her to an area of wasteland where he sexually assaulted her before attempting to rape her.

The girl managed to flee and ran towards a dog walker who raised the alarm and on arrival, officers conducted an immediate search of the area.

A scene was set up in the area while investigation work was carried out.

The offender is described as dark skinned, in his 20s, of slim build with crooked teeth and spots on his cheeks.He was wearing blue jeans and a dark coat with the hood up.A man matching his description was seen walking towards Bob Massey Close shortly after the incident.

Detective Superintendent Marie O’Loughlin, of GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “This innocent girl was subjected to a horrendous assault and we have specially trained officers continuing to support her and her family at this time.

“We are doing everything we can to find the man responsible including carrying out extensive CCTV and house to house enquiries.

“We continue to have visible police patrols in the area and would urge anyone with any concerns or queries to approach them and they will assist in any way they can.
