A fraction of the cost of many European ski resorts, yet with excellent snow conditions, uncrowded slopes and a strong ski school coaching programme, Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains are fast becoming the destination of choice for first time skiers.

Specialist to the destination, Mountain Paradise (www.mountainparadise.co.uk Tel: 0161 791 1388) recommends that beginners focus on the High Tatras resorts of Strbske Pleso and Tatranska Lomnica.

As well as skiing the 12km of slopes at Strbske Pleso resort and making the most of its superb snowboard funpark, guests booked with Mountain Paradise can also enjoy regular shuttle service access to the slopes of Tatranska Lomnica resort, which has a raft of new facilities on the newer built lower slopes, which are ideal for novice skiers, as well as the longest ski run of Slovakia with its 6.5km length.

The operator features six accommodation options in the High Tatras, from 5-star luxury to an authentic pension-style bolthole.

Located right at the ski slopes of Tatranská Lomnica and offering ski-to-door access and a wellness centre, Cedar Chalet is a Canadian log house with eight spacious, double rooms and two suites, all with ensuite facilities. As well as enjoying the stylish lounge area and popular apres ski bar, which serves a range of local draft beers and wines from many popular Slovak winemakers; guests staying at the chalet have access to an onsite café, a wellness area, with a sauna and a hot tub. There’s also a games room with billiards and table tennis and a kid’s play room.
