A campaign has been launched asking for barriers to be put around City Centre canals.

The petition, set up by Change.org follows the death of nineteen year old student Charlie Pope who went missing in the early hours of Friday morning after leaving a night club in the City Centre.

A body thought to be that of the University of Manchester Social Sciences student was found in the Rochdale canal on Friday afternoon.

The petition which has so far attracted more than thirteen thousand signatures and will be sent to Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham says:

”People keep dying by falling into the canals around Greater Manchester. Some of these deaths could be prevented if the council, canal and river trust, the bridgewater canal company Ltd and Peel Group put up barriers to protect people.”
