Former leader of Stockport Council David Goddard has been elevated to the House of Lords.

He was one of six new Liberal Democrat peers created by Nick Clegg in an announcement this morning.

Cllr Goddard is also a former Member of the Greater Manchester Police Authority, and former Non-Executive Director of Manchester International Airport.

The sixty one year old represents the ward of Ollerton and famously lots his seat two years ago when leader of the Lib Dems by just forty five votes to the Labour candidate after serving for twenty two years before winning back power in May of this year

He joins an other former Lib Dem Council leader Paul Scriven, the former head of Sheffield City Council.

Mr Scriven was famous for having filmed a video for YouTube which promoted a hotel in Sheffield, in which he mouthed an amended version of Lou Reed’s song Perfect Day.

There are now eight hundred and fifty peers, the highest level since most hereditary peers were removed following the House of Lords Act in 1999.
