Both The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University will be running their science events on Saturday 25 October, all part of the Manchester Science Festival.

At least twenty five science buskers will be lining the road between the two institutions dishing out dazzling displays of scientific wizardry.

The University of Manchester’s Science Spectacular takes place in Whitworth Hall and with more than forty interactive science stalls and the chance to take part in a range of challenging science quests, find out how to make square bubbles, help build an erupting volcano and see if you can put a fly in a headlock as well as the opportunity to meet its newest dinosaur, Gorgosaurus, and discover why he has x-appeal.

Organiser Dee-Ann Johnson says: “Science Spectacular is all about us opening our doors to anyone and everyone to come and find out more about the amazing discoveries our scientists are making every day. Some of the highlights include making graphene, discovering more about Alan Turing through cryptography and learning about how crystallography is being used to uncover new findings.

Science Extravaganza takes place in the John Dalton Building with plenty more scientific wonders on display. Bring the whole family to explore the world of science, and understand the carbon footprint of your adventures. Join us on board to discover the power of your senses, your mind and some of your favourite animals. See special surfaces which can kill germs using light. Imagine the future of our meals and learn how and why we need to keep our hearts healthy now.

Dr Sam Illingworth, from MMU, says: “The Science Extravaganza is a great opportunity for everyone, young and old, to come and interact with the world-class science and scientists at the University. If you want to build a hydrogen-powered car, make a gold tooth or go fishing for tiny organisms, then this is the event for you. We promise that you will leave with a head full of ideas and a smile on your face.”

As part of Science Spectacular tickets can be bought for The Flash Bang Show which kicks off at 16:00 in G51 the Chemistry Building at The University of Manchester. This extravaganza of sound and vision will definitely catch attention and generate enthusiasm. Exciting experiments featuring sudden colour changes, chemical clocks, fizzes, whizzes, fireworks, flashes, welding, melding, crashes and bangs give a basic introduction to the world of atoms, molecules, solids, liquids and gases.

It’s suitable for all ages (although very young children with sensitive ears might not like the louder explosions).

Elsewhere this weekend family events are also happening in many different venues across Greater Manchester throughout the Manchester Science Festival.

Lead Educational Sponsor, the University of Salford, opens the doors of its state of the art MediaCityUK campus for a weekend of free fun. Discover the Marvels of Television and become a star on screen, play with Digital Retro technology and learn how communication tools have evolved from Semaphore to Smart Phone.

At Salford SciFest, you can make seed bombs and meet robots, collaborate on an innovative iron oxide artwork, jump on board an outdoor broadcast truck and even indulge in some liquid nitrogen ice cream.

See fire made from ice, hear a jelly baby scream and make exploding bubbles at The University of Bolton Flashes and Bang workshop. Meet scientists, have fun and learn about the serious side of fires. Watch reactions between chemicals, see how dust explosions happen. A great and engaging way to interact with science, complete with experiments you definitely won’t see at school.
