Manchester’s Military History Society’s next talk will be all about Operation Market Garden.

It takes place seventy years since the Second World War’s daring Allied attempt, immortalised in the film “A Bridge Too Far” to seize bridges across the Maas and two arms of the Rhine as well as several smaller canals and tributaries to encircle Germany’s industrial heartland in the Ruhr from the north.

Had it succeeded, it would have shortened the war by six months, but the Allies were held at Arnhem Bridge and were forced to retreat.

The costly defeat saw the Parachute division leave behind nearly 1,500 dead, and more than 6,500 prisoners, many badly wounded and questions were raised which continue to this day over the plan.

Steve Hoar from the North Manchester Battlefield Society has toured the Market Garden battlefield and in the 70th anniversary year, will be talking about the operation and his battlefield visits.

The talk takes place on Tuesday 9th September 2014 at 7.30pm at the East Manchester History and Gaming Centre, Knivton Street, Godley, Hyde, SK14 2PU
Admission is £3
