There were more attacks on neutral shipping around the British coast.A Norwegian coal steamer, the Regin, carrying coal from Tyneside to Bordeaux was sunk off the straits of Dover, it’s crew of twenty two were saved.

The German attacks on shipping in the Irish Sea were having little or no effect on the Port of Manchester said reports in the Evening News.
Some of the boats attacked, including the Downshire which was sunk off the Calf of man, was well known to the city while three survivors of the sinking of the Cambank off Anglesey were inhabitants of the city.

Thomas Tetlow who lived on Viaduct Street Ardwick told the story of the sinking.The pilot spotted the periscope of the U-Boat from about 400 yards and fearing trouble the captain launched the lifeboat just as the ship was hit.

Twenty of the crew managed to get into the boat, four were killed in the explosion.

The German Admiralty declared on 4 February that the waters surrounding Great Britain and Ireland was within the seat of war and that all enemy vessels found in these waters after 18 February would be destroyed. They further stated that the vessels will be destroyed ‘even if it is not always possible to avoid thereby the dangers which threaten crews and passengers’.

The United States is understood to have acknowledged that submarine activities are not entirely covered by international law, but that it would view any attack on an American ship as ‘a grave matter, and will result in serious complications’.

Back in Manchester, a twenty eight year old women from Gorton was killed after being knocked down by a horse and van on Corporation Street.Eye witnesses said she appeared not to notice it and walked right into the van.

Staying in Gorton the wife of a labourer gave birth to triplets, two boys and a girl.They were alive and doing well said the reports and were being called George Mary and Albert after the Royal family.

With Manchester now under blackout conditions , itvwas reported that street lamps and buildings possessing glass roofs were being darkened along with the disappearance of illuminated signs which had been prominent for many years.

It was announced that for the second time this year the price of bread would be raised in Manchester. The present 2 ½ d loaf was also being discontinued as a furterhervreductioj in its weight would mean there would be no demand for it.The smallest loaf would now be the 3d loaf weighing 20ozs.
