Singing star Saara Aalto – the X-Factor’s very own ‘snow fairy’ – will be the special guest at Oldham’s Christmas Lights Switch-On, Sunday 19 November.

The family-favourite event will be a colourful ‘Winter Wonderland’ spectacular this year featuring a fantastic fireworks display and live entertainment – and it’s all free.

The big countdown is marked by an extravagant stage show, featuring Saara Aalto, plus appearances from PJ Masks, the stunning Halo Glow Show jugglers, street dance from Jessica Pearson and youngsters from Oldham Theatre Workshop.

Before the big switch on show you can meet superheroes Catboy, Owlette and Gekko from the popular TV show PJ Masks. They will be appearing at intervals throughout the day at 1pm2pm and 3pm in Parliament Square, Oldham town centre.

PJ Masks will then join Saara Aalto and the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shadab Qumer, on stage outside Tommyfield Market from 5pm to press the button and switch on the Christmas lights in a blaze of colour.

Councillor Jean Stretton, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “The Christmas Lights Switch-On is one of my favourite highlights of the year in the town centre.

“This is the second event in our winter events programme and it gives families a chance to get together and enjoy fantastic free entertainment.

“X Factor star Saara Aalto will be our special guest helping us with the switch-on and I’m sure she will put on a great show for the crowds.

“We’ve done our bit by putting on the winter events programme. Please do your bit by attending the events – and the result is a thriving town centre and local economy.”

“The switch-on provides the perfect way to round off a day of dining and Christmas shopping in Oldham.”

From 1pm there will be children’s rides and food stalls to keep you warm and well fed before the fun begins.

The stage show starts at 5pm, followed by a huge fireworks display that will light-up the night sky above the town centre.

Following the switch-on, the Christmas lights are illuminated daily from 2pm. The town centre’s traditional nativity scene will also be on High Street from the start of your advent calendars on Friday 1 December.

Shoppers can enjoy free parking for three hours at all Oldham Council car parks on weekends. But don’t forget – you must take a ticket from the machine and display it in your vehicle.

Those attending should be aware that the only access to Tommyfield Market Car Park on the day will be from Henshaw Street.

Oldham’s Christmas Lights Switch-On is the second in a programme of events taking place in Oldham Town Centre.

The next event is our hugely popular winter music festival Brass Monkeys, taking place on Saturday 2 December, 11am – 4pm. The town centre will be filled with the sound of national and local brass bands including the award-winning The Cory Band and Back Chat Brass.
