Celebrated modern artist Norman Long MAFA is holding his book launch for Oils: Techniques and Tutorials for the Complete Beginner at independent art gallery Contemporary Six on Saturday, September 22.

The book launch will accompany the unveiling of 14 brand new oil paintings by Norman, and all paintings purchased at the event will include a free signed copy. The book features each of the paintings on show, covering a range of painterly techniques and subjects.

Contemporary Six owner Alex Reuben said: “We are thrilled that Norman has decided to choose Contemporary Six to host the launch of his fantastic new book and series of oil paintings. Norman’s expert control of colour and composition has become a celebrated fixture on the walls of Contemporary Six — and now on our bookshelves, too.”

Norman was born in Preston in 1976, and after graduating from Newcastle University moved back to Preston where he lives now. Having developed into a successful oil painter and modern impressionist, Norman has exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, California, and a number of London venues.

His works have featured in the BP Portrait Award and Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibitions, and in 2010 he was awarded the coveted Laszlo Award for an evocative portrait of his father. In 2008, Norman was awarded a double scholarship to undertake postgraduate study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.

His paintings observe the world from an outsider’s perspective and magically transform mundane everyday interactions into captivating narrative paintings, which capture the fleeting moments of daily life. There is something truly unique about the way Norman translates these ordinary moments into something extraordinary.

Contemporary Six offers the Own Art scheme, which enables customers to buy a piece of art over ten interest-free payments.
