Stockport Council has marked the completion of its purchase of Merseyway by securing four retailers within the shopping centre, with negotiations with a number of other existing occupiers also nearing completion.

Over the past few days New Look, Ann Summers, Roman Originals and Lashious Beauty have all signed new leases that will see them remain in Merseyway alongside the centres other stores. These decisions are great news for Merseyway and Stockport, and mean the centre will continue to offer a wide range and mix of shops for visitors to enjoy.

The Council’s purchase of Merseyway Shopping Centre comes after many months of careful consideration and negotiation during which it was ensured that the purchase would not cost local Council tax payers a penny.

Stockport Council and its managing agents CBRE are now working to ensure that Merseyway has a bright future, and this announcement is one of the first steps on this journey. As well as working to bring new stores to Stockport, significant investments are also being planned for Merseyway over the coming years. This investment will see the centre updated and improved giving residents and businesses a shopping centre they can be proud of.

The growth of Merseyway will complement the Investing in Growth work taking place across the town centre, including at the neighbouring Redrock Stockport. Today’s successful town centres give visitors the chance to both shop and enjoy leisure activities. The Council’s work will mean that visitors to Stockport will have the chance to shop and then enjoy a visit to the brand new Light cinema or one of Redrock’s restaurants.
Councillor Kate Butler, Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council said: “It’s fantastic news that New Look, Ann Summers, Roman Originals and Lashious Beauty have all signed new leases to stay in Merseyway. Each of the stores play an important role in making the shopping centre successful and I wish them continued success for the future.

“This is an exciting time for Stockport with the Council working to transform our town centre, support existing business and attract new investment into our borough. It’s also important to note that the purchase of Merseyway didn’t cost local taxpayers a penny.

‘’The success of Merseyway is central to unlocking the potential of Stockport and ensuring that our town is at the forefront of retail in the region.”

Ben Moorhouse, Asset Management Director at CBRE commented: “Following the acquisition of Merseyway, we have actively engaged with the existing retailers to secure their commitment to Stockport. These recent deals, combined with positive ongoing discussions with other operators within Merseyway represent a positive start to the Council’s ownership. We are also in discussions with other retailers, not currently represented within Stockport, to bring them into the town and further improve the retail offer within the Scheme.

“The Investing in Growth programme within the town centre and future proposed development of Merseyway will continue to improve perception and increase the profile of Stockport to help attract new retailers and further investment into the town.”
