Manchester is getting its first new Jazz club since 1999 with the exceptionally successful, independently run Café Istanbul on Bridge Street, Manchester, set to expand with the opening of an exclusive jazz club beneath its current premises.

To coincide with the venue’s 35th anniversary, owner Sacit Onur has big plans for his new venture, La Gitane. He said: “Myself and the team at Café Istanbul are proud to launch La Gitane and we’re confident it will secure a place on the Manchester music scene with performances from elite jazz musicians.”

Established bands and performers will be co-coordinated by well known Manchester musician Matt Nickson, saxophonist and founder of the quintessential Matt and Phreds Jazz Club. Matt has been one of the main driving forces behind jazz and live music over the last 25 years in the North West and is looking forward to working alongside Sacit. He said: “Café Istanbul have been integral to the life of the city for many years and I am excited at the prospect of playing at La Gitane and looking forward to bringing the best in jazz to Manchester.”

Matt himself will be showcasing his musical talents on the launch night alongside the vocal flair of Manchester’s own Lucy Hope. Following on from supporting Pixie Lott, Cole Page and UB40 to name a few, Lucy will take the microphone to mesmerise guests with her singing prowess. Moving forward, Matt will be a regular face at La Gitane, together with a wealth of expertise from his own handpicked selection of musicians.
The official opening of the club is on the 18th of September. From then, musicians will be entertaining crowds every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9pm until the early hours with free entry every night.
