A new Marks & Spencer store looks set now to open in Rochdale’s Riverside development by Easter of 2020 after the retailer had a change of heart about opening there.

Last Autumn, the retailer in the wake of troubling financial news and store closures reversed its decision to open in the £80m development designed to boost the town’s centre and pulling out on the option of the 55,000 square foot site.

Rochdale councillors  had been asked to consider the future direction of the scheme following the announcement just after Xmas but decided to continue backing the development that will bring 24 shops, restaurants and a 6-screen cinema to the heart of Rochdale town centre.

Now it’s now set to go ahead with the launch of the new flagship.

“Today’s confirmation that M&S will be part of our fantastic £80m Rochdale Riverside development, despite challenging trading conditions for high street stores up and down the country, is testament to the huge potential they see in our town and its continuing transformation,” said Rochdale Borough Council leader Allen Brett.
