RootMetrics, the independent mobile analytics company, has today revealed how 16 UK cities compare for mobile performance. Looking across all the ways we use our mobile phones – including calls, texts, and data – the top-ranked overall performance can be found in Manchester, while London ranks a disappointing #13 out of 16 UK cities.
Manchester rose to the top spot from its third place ranking in the previous set of RootMetrics’ city rankings in the first half of 2015. Its rise to the top was at the expense of Liverpool, which dropped from the number one position to third place. Birmingham put in a consistent performance to hold off the competition and remain in second place overall.

In addition to ranking overall performance, RootMetrics has ranked the 16 cities for reliability, speed, data, call and text. Manchester was #1 for data performance and network reliability, however Liverpool still came out on top for network speed.

Scott Stonham, RootMetrics General Manager of Europe, says: “There’s just no getting away from the Manchester-Liverpool rivalry, and throughout 2015 the two cities have been tussling for the mobile top spot. While Manchester scored the most points in the second half of the year, people using their phones in Liverpool, and Birmingham too, can expect a strong overall mobile performance whatever network they are on.”
