Police are appealing for information after a man was shot in the leg in Withington late yesterday evening.

Officers  were called to Mauldeth Road West, Withington to reports that a man had been shot and found that there was no victim at the scene or in the nearby area.A short time later a man presented himself at Manchester Royal Infirmary with a gunshot wound to his leg.His remains in hospital for treatment however his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

It is believed that the man was sat in a car on Mauldeth Road East when he was approached by the offender who shot him before fleeing the scene.The incident is being treated as a targeted attack and there is believed to be no wider threat to the public.

Detective Inspector Tony Lea of GMP’s City of Manchester team said: “Any incident involving a firearm is serious and on this occasion the victim has sustained potentially life changing injuries after being shot as he sat in his car on a main road.

“We are actively appealing for information which could help us find those responsible for this shocking incident.

“Members of the public may notice an increased police presence in the area as we carry out our enquiries so if anybody has any concerns or information that they believe can assist then I would encourage them to approach one of these officers.

“Although there will be this increased police presence, I think it is important to stress that we are treating this as a targeted attack and don’t believe there to be any wider threat to other members of the public at this time.”
