Police have confirmed this afternoon that a man was kidnapped at gunpoint in Bury yesterday evening after the car that he was travelling in was rammed into.

The incident happened in Lepp Cresent around 8.45, the victim and his friend were in a Silver Volkswagen Scirocco when they were rammed by a black Toyota Avensis. The Scirocco then collided with a lamppost.

Two men wearing balaclavas got out of the Toyota and whilst making threats with a handgun stole the VW Sciroccoa forcing the victim to remain in the car as they drove away both cars.

The victim was later found safe but with cuts and bruises.

Later in the evening armed policed stopped a black vehicle matching the description and a 41 year old man was arrested.

Detective Inspector Jonathan Kelly from GMP’s Bury Borough said: “We are appealing for anyone who saw this incident to come and talk to the police.

“The kidnapped man luckily suffered minor injuries but this was a terrifying experience and whenever a gun is involved we are always thankful that someone didn’t end up more seriously injured, or even dead.

“This was at a time in the evening when people would have still been around. Someone must have seen what happened or recognise the vehicles involved. I’m appealing for those people to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 8143, alternatively via 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
