A 49 year old local boxing gym has received a DIY makeover after a local mum enlisted the support of some big local employers.

Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club in Moston, Manchester received an SOS-style make-over after local mum, Aiysha Peach enlisted the support of Sky and Mitie to refurbish the boxing gym used by local people of all ages.

The gym got a complete makeover with new ladies’ and men’s changing rooms, fresh painting throughout, new lighting fixtures and new windows, signs and mirrors.

Aiysha’s eleven year-old son, Liam Pastore, started training at the gym six months ago and although the training is phenomenal, the club itself hadn’t seen any investment for a number of years and started to fall into disrepair.

Seeing Liam and other children in the gym thriving in a very difficult sport and watching how the trainers and coaches give up their time to be there, inspired her to find a way to help the club.

The club opened its doors in 1965 by founder, and legendary boxing trainer, Brian Hughes MBE and is run by ex-WBU light-middleweight champion Thomas McDonagh.

Over the years, the team have trained British, European, Inter-Continental and World Champions including Scott Quigg, current WBA super-bantamweight champion but they receive very little government funding to keep the gym maintained.

Having enlisted the support of her employer BSkyB and their Facilities Management partner, Mitie, Aiysha has now seen her big build dream become a reality.

The project was coordinated by Ben Punter, Mitie’s BSkyB Service Manager North, and his team, who worked with Thomas and his trainers to ensure the gym really is punching above its weight.

The week-long project, which started on 30 June, was a case of all-hands-on-deck as Thomas and his team cleaned, cleared and stripped the gym before the work commenced on Monday morning whilst Aiysha secured donations to ensure the build was a success.
