A Laurence Stephen Lowry painting of Clitheroe is set to sell for around eighty to one hundred and twenty thousand pounds at an auction in London later this year.

A street in Clitheroe, painted in 1961 is up for auction at Bonham’s. It was one of Tgree paintings that Lowry made of the Lancashire town which it is said he had ties to.

The Kunzel family of nearby Sawley owned a mill in Clitheroe, and were mentioned on at least two occasions in Shelley Rohde’s biography of Lowry.

It is believed the family, some of whom attended Lowry’s funeral on February 27th 1976, were in some way related to the artist.

The painting is included in the collection of Arnold Burton, a philanthropist, motor sport enthusiast and the youngest son of the founder, Montague, of one of Britain’s biggest tailoring manufacturers.

Two earlier paintings by the artist of Clitheroe were sold last year. His 1963 oil painting, Church Brow at Clitheroe, for £70,850 and his 1966 oil painting, Church Street, Clitheroe, sold for £236,500.
