Brighten up your dark, winter nights at the Museum of Science & Industry from 19 December to 3 January with a jam-packed family programme exploring the wonders of light.
From shadow puppet workshops to light painting, giant pinhole cameras to magic lanterns – there is something for all ages to construct, create, explore and experience. 

Discover the science behind mirrors and reflection by building your very own, take home Kaleidoscope in daily, drop in and free family workshops. Be amazed by shocking shadows, astonished at the cloning cube and stunned by the headless horror in our interactive science show and discover whether it is magic or science.

See the museum in a whole new light and turn the world upside down in our hands-on Giant Pinhole Camera making workshops or grab a prop, strike a pose and throw some really cool shadow shapes at our Shadow Theatre Photobooth.

Experience life before cameras by taking part in our magic lantern show presented by Andrew Gill of the Magic Lantern Society. See authentic Victorian slides and listen as Andrew spins tales of the ordinary and extraordinary. Recommended for visitors aged 10 plus. 

And if you have ever fancied painting in the dark – without the mess – join us on 19 and 20 December only for our Light Painting workshops.

Learn the skills and photographic techniques needed to create your own amazing long-shutter speed light paintings take home. Or if you fancy your own “light bulb moment” join us and build an electrical circuit to illuminate your very own Magic Lantern.
