City of Salford swimmer Lewis Clough has been selected to represent Britain in the European Junior Championships to be held in Hungary in July.
Lewis, who is studying for his A-levels at Eccles College, won medals representing England in the Commonwealth Games in Samoa last year.
“We are very proud that Salford has produced yet another GB swimmer” said Salford Head Coach & Aquatic Development Manager John Stout. “We are delighted for Lewis and this selection represents a further milestone in his career. The Rio Olympics is a bit early for him but he is certainly talented enough to put himself in the selection frame for Tokyo in 2020.

“It is testimony to the superb work done by our coaching set up in Salford that we continue to produce athletes who compete at the highest levels and represent their country. Lewis follows in the footsteps of Luke Wood, James Doolan, Heather Frederiksen and Danny Phillips who were all selected to the GB Junior Team.”

Last month Lewis was at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow which served as trials for the Rio Olympics and the GB Junior team. His performances in the 50, 100, 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly in particular were strong enough to gain him selection to the GB Junior Team.

Just 26 athletes have been selected and 18 year old Lewis is now amongst an elite group of young swimmers in Great Britain.

The City of Salford Swimming Club has a long history of producing International Swimmers since 1977 and there have been 25 Internationals between 2002 and 2016 – an amazing achievement and fantastic recognition for the City.
