Nitrous Oxide canisters, synthetic cannabinoids, liquid gold poppers and sachets of gocaine were just some of the products seized as part of a Greater Manchester Police forcewide initiative, Operation Ramsey.

The day of action which targeted new psychoactive substances, aka as ‘legal highs’ was the first of its kind for Greater Manchester Police. It saw collaboration between organisations such as Trading Standards, Child Services, Department for Work and Pensions as well the UK Border Force Services.

Superintendent Craig Thompson, who was leading on the operation, said: “This day has really highlighted the growing risk of new psychoactive substances. The items are easily accessible from retailers across the county which is why it’s important for this type of work to be carried out.

“Our concern is that these products have similar effects as drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, and because the unstable and varied nature of the contents, the true side effects can never be predicted.

“Rest assured, this is not a one-off. We will continue to crackdown on these products with the support of our partners to ensure the safety of the public.”

As part of the operation, officers and staff visited approximately 123 retailers and recovered counterfeit DVDs and alcohol, packets of Pandora’s box, drug paraphernalia and illicit cigarettes. Three people were arrested.

NPSs are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act and side effects can include, heart palpitations, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, panic attacks and psychosis. Taking these substances can lead to criminality, including antisocial behaviour and theft – and may make users more vulnerable.
Despite their nickname, some ‘legal highs’ contain substances which are banned and it is also against the law to sell them to anyone under the age of 18.
People wishing to report a shop selling these products are advised to contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. For help or advice on all drugs including Legal Highs contact Talk to Frank on 0800 776600 www.talktofrank.com.
