John Hegley, one of the UK’s leading comic poets, brings his brand new show for adults and young audiences to Sale’s Waterside on Sunday 13 May.

John Hegley: All Hail the Snail (and other creatures) is a humorous journey through poems, songs and animal drawings created to celebrate the 35th birthday of Apples and Snakes, England’s leading organisation for performance poetry and spoken word.

Enjoy the rhyme and rhythm of this mandolin playing muse and his hilarious struggle with words, as they threaten to twist and turn out of his grasp.

The intimate 60-minute show features live music from one of two eclectic musicians: Eleanor Moreton, who draws on folk, jazz and bluegrass, or Clare Elstow, whose influences include folk, baroque and ragtime.

John Hegley is the author of 13 books of verse and prose pieces and is widely known as one of the country’s most innovative comic artists.

An Edinburgh Festival regular, John Hegley is noted for his exploration of such diverse topics as dog hair, potatoes and handkerchiefs.

The show is one of several productions that form part of Half Moon Presents, the producing arm of Half Moon, supporting the promotion and development of theatre for young audiences at a national and international level.

John Hegley commented: “All Hail the Snail is about getting young people to delight in a theatrical experience. I want to involve them and make them realise they can be participants too: from an active and emotional perspective. The show’s made up of various little scenarios about tolerance and inclusion, featuring a few unexpected characters. As the audience get to know them they discover they’re not so different after all.”

Chris Elwell, Director of Half Moon commented: “We’re delighted to be working with leading UK poet John Hegley on his new show for adults and young people. Filled with poetry, live music and stories, we are very much looking forward to taking this wonderful new show, created to celebrate the 35th birthday of Apples and Snakes, England’s leading organisation for performance poetry and spoken word, on tour across the UK.”
