They’re in ship shape!

Some Tameside Sea Cadets are amongst the first in the UK to be presented with the National Citizenship Award.

To gain the award, the Sea Cadets went on an intensive residential trip to HMS Raleigh, undertook employability training and completed a community project – for which they raised over £300!

And this week they’ll be recognised at an awards ceremony attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester and Tameside Civic Mayor Councillor Fitzpatrick.

To complete the employability training the Sea Cadets took part in activities and sessions that taught them project management and interview skills and for the community project they hosted a ‘Dragon’s Den’ event where they invited different local charities to present a pitch.

After discovering that the Tameside4Good’s Christmas Toy Appeal finds it harder to collect gifts for teenagers, the Sea Cadets decided that this campaign would be the recipient of their help as they felt that they knew what gifts young people would like. The team raised over £300 by hosting a coffee morning and then bought gifts which they presented to the local Children’s Centre.

Deputy Lieutenant Janet Evans said: “Undertaking the Award helped equip the Sea Cadets for adulthood while allowing them to develop and grow in a structured environment. The young people involved felt a real connection to the children benefitted by the Toy Appeal and enjoyed having the opportunity to help a local cause.

“The Sea Cadets offers young people fantastic experiences they would not normally get which ranges from leadership and team building, to boating aboard training ship HMS Quantock, and making friends all over the country through a variety of trips and retreats.”
