The partnership will enhance the experience of talented young musicians and promote best practice in wind orchestra development nationally and internationally.

The NYWO is the UK’s premier youth wind orchestra, bringing together some of the finest young woodwind, brass and percussion players aged 14 to 21. Over the course of three years RNCM students have the opportunity to contribute to NYWO courses as mentors, assistant conductors, composers or chamber music leaders, while RNCM staff will work as NYWO tutors.

Additionally, NYWO players will participate in RNCM projects, such as specialist instrumental workshops or side-by-side performance activities with conservatoire players.

Professor Linda Merrick, RNCM Principal, said: ‘It is wonderful that we are able to create a mutually beneficially partnership with the NYWO; one that will not only enhance the real world experience of RNCM students as they embark on professional careers, but that stands to nurture and develop a future generation of talented young musicians as well.’

Roger Minty, NYWO Chairman, said: ‘This is a great opportunity for NYWO and the RNCM to work more closely together towards creating quality opportunities for students of the NYWO, the RNCM and future generations of talented young musicians.’

The NYWO now joins a substantial list of RNCM professional partners, which together form The Platform, the College’s international centre for ensemble and vocal training. Established in 2012, The Platform provides over 400 opportunities each year for students to participate in auditions, education projects and public performances in the UK, Mainland Europe and China. No other UK conservatoire offers this number and breadth of professional experiences to its students.

Included in the list of professional partners is the Netherlands Blazers (Wind) Orchestra, which offers three RNCM students the chance to take part in a tour of Holland with the group, followed by a televised New Year concert later released on DVD. The RNCM also boasts its own world-renowned Wind Orchestra which, through a unique series of concerts, commissions, broadcasts and over 30 professional recordings, has transformed the repertoire and performance standard of wind ensemble music.
