The candidate who was standing as the Green candidate in Greater Manchester’s Mayoral Candidate has died suddenly.

Fifty year old Deyika Nzeribe died from a heart attack yesterday evening.

He joined the Green Party in 2011 and regularly stood for election in Manchester under the Green Party banner.

His campaign manager Astrid Johnson told BBC news that party members were in “total shock” after losing a great friend and colleague.

Deyika has lived in Hulme for the last fifteen years.

He was the Co-Founder of the Northern Police Monitoring Project, a grassroots organisation focused on independent, citizen-led scrutiny of the Police, and was active in Greens of Colour, dedicated to promoting racial diversity within the Green Party, to ensure that the Party reflects the diversity within our community and the country.

He was the Chair of Commonword, a writing development organisation based in Manchester, providing opportunities for new and aspiring writers to develop their talent and potential; and Co-Chair of Sustained Theatre, promoting an inclusive landscape for British theatre.

Deyika was also on the Board of the Manchester Environmental Education Network and was involved in a number of community projects across the City.

Former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett writing on Facebook said:

“Deyika’s death is a huge loss for the Green Party, but also for the city of Manchester. My thoughts are with his family, friends and Manchester Green Party for their loss.

“It was my privilege to work closely with Deyika in my time as leader. He was a man of enormous energy, passion and creativity, caring deeply for his home community of Hulme and broader communities across Manchester.”

He dedicated his life to working for these communities, and particularly to helping those at most disadvantage within them, whilst experiencing first-hand the challenges of trying to survive in the precarious casual economy.”
