Joan As Police Woman & Benjamin Lazar Davis will be touring the UK this November including a date at Manchester Gorilla.
The first video from their forthcoming album premiered on Clashmusic this week, the video stars Joan and Benjamin as well as the brilliant US comedy actor Fred Armisan . Joan and Fred have been firm friends since playing in Those Bastard Souls together in the mid 90s .
On making the video, Fred had this to say:
‘I loved working on this video. I already knew I was going to feel this way about it because I admire and love the music and visual artwork of Joan As Police Woman. Videos, cover art etc. She told me about this project and about Benjamin Lazar Davis, then she sent me the music. Even though I already said yes to doing the video, in my head I said ‘Yes!’ again. We shot it at this auto repair shop in Brooklyn. It looked really cool. Not too new but still neat and full of character. I don’t know how they got them to agree to let this production take over the garage. Joan and Benjamin were already wearing these mechanic uniform overalls. I was supposed to lip sync to the song but there’s that not-four-four timing so Joan was my conductor, right in my peripheral vision, showing me where the one is so that I could match up to the beat. That melody, it’s so good. I couldn’t stop hearing it, long after we finished shooting.’
Their forthcoming album, ‘Let It be You will be released by Joan’s original UK record label, Reveal Records on October 21st 2016.
A true collaboration from studio to stage, from two musicians well known for their ability to effortlessly cross musical genres. A deeply soulful artist Joan has famously worked with Antony and the Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, Lou Reed and David Sylvian and Benjamin is talented multi-instrumentalist who currently performs with Okkervil River, Cuddle Magic and Bridget Kearney.
