IWM North is calling for artists to join an evening of scratch performances inspired by Britain’s original rebel artist, Wyndham Lewis.

The museum is inviting artist submissions for a chance to perform at the Responding to a Rebel scratch event on 21 November.

Each performance on the evening will be inspired by IWM North’s current special exhibition Wyndham Lewis: Life, Art, War, the largest UK retrospective of the artist and writer’s work to date.

A radical force in British art and literature, Lewis was the founder of Britain’s only true avant-garde movement, Vorticism. Spanning the First World War to the nuclear age, Lewis’ career encompassed one of the most violent and chaotic periods in human history. It was a period of change and fracture.

Lewis was a controversial figure whose ideas, opinions and personality inspired, enticed and repelled in equal measure. When it came to his work, he chose to produce unpopular and even antagonistic critiques of society and his contemporaries.
In the spirit of Wyndham Lewis, IWM North is looking for rebel creatives from all performance art-forms including comedy, theatre, live art and music for an evening of work-in-progress performances and the chance to share new ideas with other artists and audience members.

The performances should:
 Be 10 minutes long (as an extract or complete work)
 Respond to any of the following themes: art and war, Lewis and Vorticism, self-image or
marginalised genius
 Work with minimal set and props

IWM North will offer you:
 A chance to perform in one Manchester’s most unique cultural spaces
 Up to £50 towards materials and development (on production of valid receipts)
 Free tickets to the exhibition Wyndham Lewis: Life, Art, War for research purposes
 The chance for your work to be debated and discussed by a supportive audience

To apply:
Contact scratch@iwm.org.uk with:
 Your brief artist biography
 150 word synopsis explaining your submission
 Up to three images of your current or previous work and up to 2 mins of video footage

All participants must be over 18 years of age. Deadlines for submissions is 5pm on 29 September 2017.
