woman doing housekeeping

Cleaning your home seems like a simple task, but when you sit down and think about it, where do you start? What’s the best way to clean? Wonder no more, this guide features some great tips on how to clean your household items the ‘proper way’.

Change your strategy

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when cleaning is doing it room by room. You should complete one task such as dusting, throughout the entire house before you begin task number two. This keeps you going faster and puts you in a better mindset for cleaning.

Here are a couple of other tips to adopt when you next clean your home:

Make an all in one purpose cleaner

Reduce the amount of unhealthy chemicals in your home with this recipe that is guaranteed to leave items in your home sparkling:

  • Simply combine together four tablespoons of baking soda and warm water in a reusable spray bottle.
  • Shake and you have a ready to use all purpose cleaner.
  • For best results use with a sponge to quickly remove stuck on dirt.

Dusting

When it comes to dusting items such as TVs, shelves, picture frames or handrails use a dampened microfiber cloth, with warm water. This gets rid of fingerprints and loose bits of dust or dirt and ensures you don’t simply move the dust around to settle later.

Household items you forget to clean

There are many household items that we all forget to clean. If it’s not an everyday household item we use, it often gets pushed to the back of our minds. To help, we’ve put together a round up featuring a handful of items that you should be cleaning more often.

Toaster

Toasters are considered to be one of the main causes of fires associated with portable cooking devices, due to leftover debris that can ignite, so it is a good idea to keep yours properly cleaned.

Unplug your toaster, remove the crumb tray and wash it with some mild soapy water. Rinse and dry before putting it back in your toaster. You should also turn your toaster upside down and over the top of your sink, then shake it. This removes all crumbs stuck to the heading

element of your toaster – you can also use a small brush or toothbrush to brush any food out of the heating elements. Clean the outside with a warm wet towel and dry before using again.

Phone

Your phone will collect a large amount of bacteria and it has been discovered that some phones are dirtier than a toilet seat.

Using your homemade all purpose spray, spray the mixture onto a cloth and rub it over the entire phone including the buttons. Turn your phone off if possible when cleaning.

Hair dryer

Most hair dryers have screens underneath the end cap to prevent lint from entering the heating element and prevent it catching fire. Lint will build upon your hairdryer over time so it needs to be cleaned.

Make sure your hairdryer is unplugged, unscrew the vent end cap and rinse the filter with water to get rid of any lint build up and then allow it to fully dry. Using a cotton swab clean the vent girls and then wipe down the outside of the hairdryer with a damp cloth and dry with a towel.

Iron

After lots of usages, the plates on your iron can get grimy. As a result of this, it will become sticky and hard to use, leaving stains on your clothes. Don’t leave the same water in the iron either as it can block up the steam holes.

Make sure your iron is off during this process. Using one tablespoon of baking soda and two tablespoons of water, mix them together to make a paste. Then using your fingers spread the paste onto the iron plate and wipe clean with a wet and warm cloth. Use a cotton swab to clean out the steam holes and then fill the iron with distilled water, turn it on the hottest setting and use a clean cloth to polish up.
