The injuries sustained by an elderly woman whose wedding ring was snatched from her finger during a violent robbery in Stretford are worse than initially thought.

Eileen Blane, 87, was in her home on Castleton Avenue at about 3pm last Friday when a man forced his way into the house.

He knocked her to the floor and hit her with an unknown object while demanding cash and jewellery.

He then forcibly stole her wedding ring from her finger. While he ransacked upstairs she bravely managed to escape and alerted her neighbours.

She was treated by paramedics on the night for bruises over her face and head but was taken to hospital on Tuesday evening after her health deteriorated and found to have sustained a number of broken ribs and internal injuries.

She remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The robber is described as white, about 5ft 8ins, of slim build and was wearing a dark coloured jacket with the hood covering his face.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Parker of GMP’s Trafford borough said: “This was a disgusting and intrusive attack on a vulnerable woman in her own home which is where a person should feel safest.

“Although it was initially thought that she had only sustained bruising, Eileen was taken back to hospital on Tuesday where she was found to have suffered much more serious injuries at the hands of her attacker.

“As if the physical trauma wasn’t bad enough, she has been left absolutely heartbroken that her wedding ring was stolen and is desperate for its return.

“The ring was given to her by her late husband and is the item which has the most sentimental value to her out of all of her possessions.

“Given that it happened during broad daylight, we believe it is entirely possible that somebody may have seen something and can help with our enquiries.

“If you have any information at all then I would urge you to please get in touch with us as a matter of urgency and help us find the man responsible.”
