International technology giant Hitachi has established a European Big Data Laboratory at Citylabs, Manchester Science Partnerships'(MSP) £25m stunning new high-specification office and laboratory space.

The Laboratory is now one of three Hitachi European R&D bases related to ‘Big Data’ activities.

The project work at Citylabs will focus on disease prevention and improving the quality of patient care in the UK, through the study of data-intensive health science and digital technologies.

Citylabs is MSP’s 100,000 sq ft redevelopment of the former Manchester Royal Eye Hospital into a purpose-built biomedical centre of excellence and was launched earlier this year by the Chancellor George Osborne.

In his keynote speech, the Chancellor cited Citylabs as an important contributor to the work of “building the Northern Powerhouse”.

Rowena Burns, Chief Executive at Manchester Science Partnerships comments:

“We are absolutely delighted that a global player like Hitachi has chosen Citylabs as an ideal home for their ground-breaking work in healthcare innovation. This is yet more evidence of the strength of collaboration and how Industry, working closely with academic and clinical partners, can help drive Manchester’s vision to be at the forefront of health innovation. It’s this willingness of our partners to work together that will help shape the next generation of digital healthcare technologies and their shared belief in a common goal that will drive direct inward investment and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.”
