Heritage horseboating trips and family nature walks are being planned along the historic 200-year old Rochdale Canal in Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd as part of the South Pennine Ring Canal Festival.
The Horseboating Society will be offering free trips on the horse-drawn boat ‘Vixen’ on Saturday 17th October from Hebden Bridge to Mytholmroyd and Sunday 18th October from Mytholmroyd to Hebden Bridge.

Claire Teague, from the Canal & River Trust, said: “These family friendly events are aimed at getting people to come to discover the wonderful canal which is right on their doorstep.

“The horse-drawn boat trips will give people a chance to learn about the heritage of the canal and how people used to travel along it. We will also be hosting family activities so people can discover the wonderful array of bugs, birds or beasties along the canal.”

Sue Day, from the Horseboating Society, added: “Nowadays a horse-drawn boat is a very rare sight. The Horseboating Society is pleased to work within the Rochdale Canal Festival to preserve and promote a horse-drawn boat on the Rochdale Canal. The public are invited as passengers to experience this rare form of transport on board the horseboat Vixen.”
The free family activities in Mytholmroyd are run by Oakapple Environmental on Sunday 18th October – “Autumn Colours” and Monday 26th October – “Canal I Spy” and can be booked by calling Laura on 07894 572171.
