As university students prepare to graduate this summer, research from an online job site, reveals that the Financial sector is offering the majority of Manchester’s entry level roles this year, followed by Computer and Mathematics.

The data from Indeed demonstrates a 40% rise in graduate jobs for Computer and Mathematical occupations across the UK in the last year, making it clear that Manchester is contributing to the growth of the sector, perhaps partly due to the city’s dedication to the subject, even going as far to having a ‘STEM Hub’ where STEM ambassadors and professionals deliver training and resources to enhance STEM delivery within schools creating links between industry and education.

However, it appears a noticeable industry with low hiring numbers is Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports and Media, coming in eighth place. With Nesta campaigning for the government to invest more heavily in the creative economy as one that is hard to automate, it’s going to be difficult to encourage young people to take on these subjects when it’s not one of the largest graduate recruiting industries.

Worryingly, the healthcare industry did not even make it into the top industries hiring graduates – concerning considering recent local statistics reveal that only one Merseyside hospital hit A&E waiting time targets in the last week of December last year.

The top industries hiring entry level roles in Manchester are:

1. Finance

2. Computer and Mathematics

3. Sales

4. Architecture and Engineering

5. Education, Training and Library

6. Life, Physical and Social Science

7. Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports and Media

8. Office and Administrative Support

9. Legal occupations
“Manchester’s hiring data reflects the importance of the investment the government is putting into STEM learning initiatives,” comments Gerard Murnaghan, VP EMEA, Indeed.

“Recent research from Indeed indicated younger generations favour office-based, creative jobs in Sales, Arts, Design, Media and Education – demonstrating a potential skills shortage as these roles are in the latter half of the top industries recruiting. As we continue to educate young people of the importance of the STEM subjects – which largely make up the top 5 recruiting industries – it is important job seekers see the employment value in it.”
