A four day festival with a difference takes place at Night & Day, Oldham Street, Manchester in October. Curated by Dave Haslam, it’s a unique mix of live music, spoken word performances, and DJ events.

WAM – Words And Music – includes live music from the likes of the Oreilles, Fujiya & Miyagi, Liines, and Laetitia Sadier (ex-Stereolab).  Plus spoken word events showcasing almost a dozen poets, and performers. And a Sunday afternoon DJ set from Konny Kon (Children of Zeus) among others.

WAM Fest has been curated by DJ/writer Dave Haslam, who says his motivation for the Festival is connected with his latest book, his memoirs, ‘Sonic Youth Slept On My Floor’; “Writing the book brought back inspiring memories of the mid-1980s when I was involved every week putting on bands and other events in small venues. My desire to do that now, again, has resurfaced. I still have an absolute love for it all.”

Thursday includes Liines; described by John Kennedy as “absolutely incredible”, they released their debut album Stop-Start earlier this year).Friday features a rare solo set by Laetitia Sadier (ex-Stereolab), the first Manchester show for the French act Le Prince Miiaou and a headlining slot from emerging stars, the Orielles; Saturday includes two new bands, Cold Water Swimmers and Grimm Twins, supporting Fujiya & Miyagi, described by Haslam as “one of my favourite bands from the last fifteen years.”

Haslam points out that spoken word events have multiplied in the city in recent years, which has inspired him to programme spoken word performers into WAM Fest alongside the music; the entire Sunday evening is being handed over to the award-winning spoken word night ‘Verbose’, who will be showcasing almost a dozen poets, and performers, including special appearance by writer/actor/poet Rosie Fleeshman fresh from a triumphant run of her one-woman show ‘Narcissist In the Mirror’ at Edinburgh this Summer.
