Introverted skateboarder Camille lives with her single mother. After a startling injury, she promises her mother she’ll hang up her board, but the pull to skate is too strong. The film opens on Fri 28 Sept, and on Sun 16 Sept we’ll be joined by director Crystal Moselle and members of the cast for a Q&A following this preview screening.

Sun 23 Sept, 13:10 – Billy Liar

Few films tell a heart-breaking story as hilariously as Billy Liar, the tale of a young clerk whose daydreams in his Yorkshire home town were gleefully brought to life on screen by director John Schlesinger. Released into a Britain newly smitten with working class pop culture, it forever sealed the fame of Hull dockworker’s son Tom Courtenay. This screening will be introduced by Andy Willis, Senior Visiting Curator for Film at HOME.

Agnès Varda and JR have things in common: their passion for images in general and more particularly questioning the places where they are showed, how they are shared, exposed. Birds’ Eye View will host a post-screening discussion, as part of our Agnès Varda: Gleaning Truths season.

Leading film critic Mark Kermode presents a night of music and talk as he recounts his utterly foolhardy attempts to fulfil his dreams of becoming a pop star. Mark will be signing copies of his new book, Mark Kermode: How Does it Feel? A Life of Musical Misadventures, after the show.

Sat 6 Oct, 18:20 – A Northern Soul

Following 2015’s Doc/Fest Grand Jury Winner A Syrian Love Story, Sean McAllister returns to his home city of Hull, as curator of its UK City of Culture opening for this tale of his friendship with struggling warehouse worker Steve Arnott. Sean and Steve will join us for a post-screening Q&A.

From Mon 8 Oct – France on Screen, Now… and Then – This eight-week film course explores how films inform and illustrate what has happened to France and its people over 50 years, from les événements of May 1968 to today, with President Macron in the Élysée Palace.

In addition Not Just Bollywood, the current season of classic and new titles from India’s independent film scene, runs to Sun 30 Sept; Black History Month, featuring a documentary featuring the legendary James Baldwin, runs Wed 3 – Sun 14 Oct; the Asia Triennial Manchester 2018 runs Fri 5 – Sun 21 Oct; .

The 2018 Film Fear season, put together in association with Film4, features around a dozen film and runs Fri 26 – Wed 31 Oct; and looking ahead to November, they have the Jewish Film Festival and a short season of films from South Korea.
