Stockport Council has announced that just over 1,300 extra trees will be planted on streets across Stockport over the next four years, starting this year.

This more than doubles its commitment to greening roads across the borough through tree planting.

Last year a commitment to plant 800 trees was made, but this new announcement brings the number of new trees that will line streets across Stockport by the end of 2021 to 2,100.

Work began on St Lesmo Road in Edgeley last week and will continue throughout the town over the coming years. As well as making streets more pleasant places to be, the planting of so many new trees will also help to improve the environment and air quality for residents across Stockport.

Over the next four years the Council, in partnership with Totally Local Company, will be planting the new trees across the borough as well as replacing missing, removed or dead street trees. The trees species selected, which include Hawthorn, Rowan, Oak and Lime, are being chosen for their suitability for specific sites, and to add interest to the local area. Each tree will be planted with a stake and a cage to support and protect it.

Councillor Sheila Bailey, Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, who planted the first tree, said: “Trees are a real asset to our neighbourhoods and are one of the most important ways in which we can keep our borough green. Trees make our streets more pleasant places in which to live, walk, cycle or sit. Over this winter season it is intended to plant the first tranche of 450 trees, followed in the next three years with a similar number. We are all aware of the vital role trees play in our environment and I am delighted that we have been able to announce such a large increase to our tree planting scheme”.
