During the last few years, DJ/writer Dave Haslam has hosted ‘Close Up’ onstage interviews with the likes of Nile Rodgers, John Lydon, Kate Tempest, Olivia Laing, Paddy Considine, Will Self, and Roisin Murphy.

The ‘Close Up’ series continues with these two onstage interviews; novelist Jay McInerney (who made his name with ‘Bright Lights, Big City’) and Lemn Sissay (launching ‘Gold from the Stone’, his first new poetry collection for eight years).

Jay McInerney is one of the most acclaimed Amercian novelists of his generation. At this special event to mark the publication of his latest work, ‘Bright, Precious Days’, McInerney will be inconversation with writer/DJ Dave Haslam. ‘Bright, Precious Days’ is a portrayal of Russell and Corrine Calloway who have spent half their lives in the bright lights of New York. Theirs is the generation that flew too close to the sun on wings of cocaine – and whose lives changed irrevocably when planes crashed into the Twin Towers. A moving, deeply humane novel about the mistakes we make, persistence in struggle and love’s ability to adapt and survive, it confirms McInerney as a great chronicler of our times. There will also be time for audience questions, and the evening with conclude with a book signing.

Lemn Sissay’s new book of poetry – ‘Gold from the Stone’ – brings together new writing and a selection of his best-loved poems. Launching the book in Manchester, in the main theatre at Home, Lemn will read from the collection, and discuss his life and work with Dave Haslam. There will also be an audience Q&A and a book signing.

Lemn grew up with foster parents in Lancashire, and, from the ages of 12 to 17, in a series of children’s homes. He’d written his first poetry collection by the age of 20, by which time he had made Manchester his home. His poems have been embedded in the pavement along Tib Street, sculpted in iron and built from concrete, and declaimed in over twenty countries. He has recorded with Secret Society and Leftfield; performed to thousands of people worldwide; and, with a high profile on TV and radio, become one of the nation’s best-loved voices. He was the official poet of the 2012 London Olympics, and is a patron of the Letterbox Club, supporting children in care. He is the Chancellor of the University of Manchester. Lemn is much-loved in Manchester and this special event is sure to be a hugely memorable evening.
