Castleton Swimming Baths have officially re-opened to the public after a major refurbishment at the popular pool was celebrated in style.

Dignitaries from across the borough gathered at the special re-opening ceremony to see Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Ian Duckworth, cut the ribbon and declare the baths officially open.

It was the culmination of months of work, after business Crewe Industrial launched a rescue package to secure the pool’s long-term future.

The company, working in partnership with the council following a community asset transfer, has refurbished many areas of the pool and re-opened part of the famous old balcony.

There will be plenty of opportunity for people to enjoy a dip, as the new look baths will be open 7 days a week throughout the year.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, local councillors and staff from Crewe Industrial, Castleton Health and Leisure and their partners Enlightening and True Serenity.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for leisure, said: “It was a special day and great for people to see their hard work come to fruition. So many organisations and individuals have invested time, money and energy in making this project work.

“I am sure the refurbished pool will be a resounding success story and I would like to thank everyone, particularly Crewe Industrial and Castleton councillors, who have played their part in restoring the baths to their former glory.”

Nick Crewe, owner of Crewe Industrial, said: “The pool project has been a labour of love for the last 6 months but we got there thanks to hard work, a can do attitude and a wonderful team. It’s great to see the baths open again.

“I learnt to swim at this pool and spent hours there in my school holidays. We now need the fantastic support from everyone to continue, ensuring Castleton Pool remains at the heart of the local community for decades to come.”

Joanne Platts, project manager for Castleton Health and Leisure, said: “The pool is thriving, thanks to the support of so many residents, schools and community groups. In a further boost, we now have a refurbished balcony open with a fantastic view of the baths. Thanks to everyone, particularly our sponsors, who have supported the project.”
