A Bolton Photography student Ian Smith will launch a personal exhibition next weekend when he debuts Brits on the Beach at Bolton Little Theatre.

Ian will introduce his body of work, capturing a day of fun on the beach, at the launch event on Saturday 21 January. Taking place from 11.30am, the event will include light refreshments and a speech by the Chairman of the Charles Henry Ashley historic lifeboat, Piers Breeland.

The exhibition will run for one week, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm each evening, in aid of the Charles Henry Ashley historic lifeboat.

‘I was invited in September last year by Sandra Leatherbarrow, who is one of the volunteers at Bolton Little Theatre, to create an exhibition,’ said Ian.

‘The theme I selected was a fundraising day held at Cemaes Bay in Anglesey on the August bank holiday in aid of the lifeboat. The exhibition is a documentary body of work which reflects the fun, frolics and the happy atmosphere on that one afternoon. The day was excellent in terms of weather, the support from people, the variety of games and the fun had.’

Ian is a second-year student at the University of Bolton and said that the work he has been doing on the course played a major role in his progression as a photographer.

‘I have always had a passion for photography,’ said Ian. ‘Even as a working Dad of two, I managed to keep my finger on the button by taking pictures on family holidays, the local landscapes and the many dogs we have welcomed into the family over the years.

‘I am always experimenting and learning new skills to help to stay fresh to the practical side of my work. Now, as a second year student studying for a BA in Photography at the University of Bolton, it is like a dream come true to be able to keep developing my natural affinity for photography.

‘For 2017 I am planning, along with my son Mark, a photographic expedition to the Western Isles of Scotland, to retrace a journey made by photographer Paul Strand in the 1940’s.’
