Progress on Stockport Council’s Brinnington Regeneration Plan was marked this week with a ground breaking ceremony at the Blackberry Lane site, where Countryside will start the building work for new homes.

Countryside, which is the Council’s preferred housing developer in Brinnington, has the approval to build 281 two-, three- and four-bedroom houses at various sites across the area over a five-year period, with a range of products available to ensure homes are affordable.

The ceremony was attended by local resident Bob Kearsley, Local Ward Councillors, the Executive Member for Communities and Housing, the Mayor and Mayoress of Stockport and representatives from Countryside, marking the start of the first phase of development.

Mr Kearsley is a pioneer of voluntary activity in Brinnington and has successfully run an older people’s social club from the community centre for over 30 years, hosting coffee mornings, training, arts and crafts, indoor bowling as well as a dance and drama group.
The Brinnington Regeneration Plan, which is part of the Council’s Investing in Stockport Programme, will also include the development of a new £5 million sports and leisure facilities which will be located in Brinnington Park and will replace the existing, out-dated Lapwing Centre.

Councillor Sheila Bailey, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Housing, said: “The new housing development in Brinnington will provide opportunities both for local people and those wishing to move into the area. Stockport needs more housing and this development will make a valuable contribution to our overall housing provision.

“The new sports centre will create greater opportunities for participation in sport through high quality, affordable facilities, accessible to everyone. The significant investment required to build these new developments demonstrates the Council’s confidence in and commitment to the future of Brinnington.”

John Grealis, Regional Operations Director at Countryside, said: “We are extremely proud that we were chosen to bring our partnership expertise to the Brinnington Regeneration Plan. Countryside has a proven track record in residential-led urban regeneration, working with local authorities and partners to create vibrant mixed tenure communities. We pride ourselves on making places people love and are looking forward to welcoming new residents to the area.”
