Would you consider yourself a materialistic person? Because you wouldn’t be alone if you did! A recent survey conducted by storage company Ready Steady Store revealed that 46% of the UK would describe themselves as such.

As we have seen a growth in the use of social media and the marketing that has come with it, we are more inclined than ever to make impulse purchases in a desperate bid to keep up with the latest trends and own all the hottest news products and gadgets, but is any of it really necessary?

It is clear that the UK has no problems parting with their hard-earned cash, however when it comes to parting with belongings that we no longer need nor use, we find it much more difficult. 33% of the UK said that it was the sentiment held in particular items that made it hard for them to get rid of them and another 29% said they like to keep things as they always want to ‘be prepared’.

By keeping unused items, we are taking up valuable space in our homes that could be used more efficiently. Over a quarter of people surveyed (33%) said that their bedroom is where they store most of their belongings and therefore struggle for space.

With the rise of social media has come the rise of influencers, subtly encouraging us to add to our wardrobes, but have you ever actually thought about how much of your wardrobe you wear? Because we all know we have a few items with tags still hanging from them in there somewhere. According to the survey almost one in five people (20%) say that they wear less than a quarter of their clothes!

Seasonal clear outs are something we always say we are going to do, however only one in five of us actually get around to doing it. The survey revealed that we are a caring nation when it comes to the ways in which we dispose of our unwanted items, with about three quarters of people in the UK (67%) donating their possessions to charity when having a clear out, whilst another 32% recycle them.

Seeing your home as a living space and not a storage space is important, as this will allow you to enjoy your space more and feel less stressed. So why not plan your next clear out, as they say, ‘tidy home, tidy mind’!
