In Brazil’s Olympic year, HOME presents a flavour of South American culture with a season of Brazilian inspired films, art and performance
Latin America heads a little closer to HOME from Thursday 21 July for a Manchester meets Brazil season running until October. Featuring a film Weekender, live music, performance, a language taster event and a brand new summer art exhibition showcasing the five winners of the country’s largest contemporary art prize, Prêmio Marcantonio Vilaça CNI Sesi Senai – this brand new season celebrates the sights, sounds, tastes and rhythms of contemporary Brazilian culture.

Film fans are in for a treat from Thursday 21 until Sunday 24 July, when HOME kickstarts its Brazilian season with a selection of critically acclaimed films set in the Northeast, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasilia.

The Brazilian Weekender is presented in partnership with the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds – and features award-winning and critically acclaimed dramas and documentaries exploring contemporary and ever-changing Brazilian society. From politics and culture to youth and its burgeoning fashion industry, these cinematic gems give a real taste and flavour of life in Latin America.

Following the Brazilian Film Weekender there is the launch of HOME’s brand new summer art show – Behind The Sun: Prêmio Marcantonio Vilaça CNI Sesi Senai – on Friday 22 July.

Offering a snapshot of new work from the five winners of the country’s largest contemporary art prize, Prêmio Marcantonio Vilaça, this exhibition, curated by Marcus Lontra, runs until Sunday 2 October. Featuring new film, performance, sculpture and photography by Grupo EmpreZa, Virginia de Medeiros, Gê Orthof, Berna Reale and Nicolás Robbio – these five distinctive artists all reflect the diversity and complexity of contemporary Brazil and challenge preconceptions of a country often reduced to frivolous, carnivalesque stereotypes. This exhibition is a partnership with Manchester School of Art, in conjunction with Instituto Plano Cultural. Prêmio Marcantonio Viliça is supported by CNI, SESI and SENAI.

HOME celebrates the launch of this Brazilian season and summer exhibition on Friday 22 July with a fiesta complete with live music, DJs, food and cocktails. Manchester-based nine-piece band Riot Jazz start proceedings with their twisted mix of funk, soul, hip-hop and aggressive jazz in Tony Wilson Place. Following their brass-boosted set taking in the Balkans to Brooklyn, via Latin America – the doors open to Behind the Sun: Prêmio Marcantônio Vilaça CNI SESI SENAI. The party continues into the night with DJs, caipirinhas and BBQ.

Introductory talks and a free language taster event will complete the Brazilian Weekender line-up on Sunday 24 July. Led by staff from the University of Manchester, this free and relaxed introduction to the language invites Portuguese speakers and learners of all levels to pop in and pick up some useful holiday phrases or study the language and culture in more depth. Join us for some film-related conversaçã!

The films and events in the Brazilian Weekender are presented in partnership with the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds.

As the Brazilian season continues into August, HOME is delighted to welcome Brazilian-based performer Tiago Cadet on Saturday 20. His work lies at the border between theatre, dance and visual arts. In his performance piece, Alla Prima, Cadet takes us on an exploration of representations of the human body throughout history. Using his own body alongside more than five centuries worth of images, he looks at the construction and invention of Brazil and the creation of certain ideas of what is Brazil, Brazilian and Brazilian-ness.

The Brazil season concludes on Sunday 2 October with the final day of Behind the Sun: Prêmio Marcantonio Vilaça CNI Sesi Senai.
