Getting ready to go back to school after the long summer holiday is always a challenge. The kids are excited about getting back to class for new experiences whilst parents are trying to get everything together in good time.

To help you eliminate any stress and help prepare your child for the new year, all you need is a little organisation and some careful consideration. Here are five tip for parents, to help kick start the brand new school year.

1. Re establish school routines

Seven to ten days prior to the first day of school, practice getting back into the daily routine. You can do this by making them go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, as well as eat breakfast and dinner at the same time they would during school.

The likelihood that they’ve done anything educational during the holidays is probably quite slim. Children need to exercise their brains, so encourage them to read and write in the last couple of weeks before heading back to school. All of this will help them feel prepared for the big day.

2. Shop for school supplies/uniforms

A good way to get your child excited about starting school again is shopping for school supplies. Let them pick out their own lunchbox, bag and pencil case – this is a great way to give them a little bit of responsibility.

While shopping for new supplies and stationery don’t forget their uniform. They have more than likely outgrown some of last year’s clothes – especially their shoes – so it’s a good idea to get some new bits whilst you’re already in shopping mode and get those feet measured. While it might still feel warm, it’s a good idea to prep for the rain and the cold weather conditions to come with some new waterproof clothing. A Muddy Puddles Pac A Mac is a good choice, these can fit easily in their bag until they need them or double up as a lightweight jacket in the build up to winter.

3. Review school materials and information

Most children come home at the end of summer with a ton of information regarding the new year ahead, such as a new teacher’s name and important dates to remember. Make sure you have read through this information, marked down all the important dates in your calendar and filled out the correct forms for them to take back to school.

4. Get organised

The best way to prepare for going back to school is to be organised. Make sure you’ve had a look through your child’s timetable and discussed it with them so they know exactly what they’ve got lined up and can be prepared for their new lessons with all the right equipment.

A good idea would also be to create a designated a spot in your house for homework time. This can help eliminate all the paper clutter you’ve previously had over the years and can even help your child concentrate.

5. Make an after school game plan

For many parents your working hours don’t fit with the school hours, so you’ll need to make a plan for where your child goes when school finishes. Figure out where they’ll stay until you can pick them up – whether that’s with a friend or a family member. You could also check if there are any after-school programmes on. This will help get rid of any confusion during the first couple of weeks back.

Just a little bit of organisation can help ensure your child (and you) have an easy transition into the new school year. Follow these steps and feel prepared for the new school year ahead.
