More than 150 new houses will start being built in Oldham in the next few months to tackle the housing shortage.

There are currently 20,000 people on the housing waiting list in Oldham. These new First Choice Homes Oldham developments in Coleridge Road, Sholver, and Acre Lane, Derker, will help provide much needed homes for local people.

These two schemes were given planning permission at an Oldham Council Planning Committee meeting on November 22, in addition to other ongoing developments.

First Choice Homes Oldham Homes and Investment Director Dave Woods said: “We are making real progress with our plans to build at least 800 new homes by 2022. There is a severe housing shortage and we are working hard to improve the situation in the borough. We have already had planning permission for two developments in Keb Lane and Thorp Road, so this is more great news. The homes will be energy efficient, meaning they will help people to reduce their energy bills.”

The site at Coleridge Road will have 49 properties: 12 two-bedroom houses; 29 three-bedroom houses; six, two-bedroom cottage apartments and two, two-bedroom cottage apartments. Each house will have its own car parking space and rear garden.

Out of these, 41 houses will be available on a rent to buy basis, and eight will be available for affordable rent.

The Acre Lane site will have 51 properties; 21 two-bedroom houses and 30 three-bedroom. All of these will be available on a rent to buy basis. All these will be available on a rent to buy basis.

Rent to Buy is a government scheme to enable home ownership for those working but struggling to buy their own home. Homes are let at 80 per cent of local private rent to give people the opportunity to save for a deposit to buy their first home.

Keb Lane in Bardsley and Thorp Road in Royton were both approved for planning permission at the September Oldham Council Planning Committee.

Keb Lane will have 28 houses: 8 two-bedroom houses; 18 three-bedroom houses and two, two-bedroom bungalows.

Thorp Road will have 28 houses: eight two-bedroom houses; 18 three-bedroom houses; two two-bedroom bungalows.

Each new home on all the development sites will have rear gardens and parking spaces. New trees and shrubs will be planted as part of the landscaping work on all the sites.
